All in all, this is a bad and disturbing development. The rise of censorship is a serious issue in the 21st century, and now we can add Tumblr to the platforms that allow it to happen. Apple (and Verizon) might have bullied them into it, but Tumblr didn’t fight it, which is what they should have done.
Instead, they blindly excluded people. The weakest got hit the hardest. Cultures need subcultures, like the ones that had naturally grown out of Tumblr over the past decade—they need it to evolve. Now the subcultures have scattered, fallen apart.
A few years ago, most of us, when hearing a term like “transgender lesbian and queer adult furry artist”, would have thought, “Huh?!” Now we are used to it. Now we know people come in many colors and shapes. Tumblr was partly responsible for paving the road to acceptance—they delivered bricks—but the current policy has changed their identity.
It’s as if someone saw a little fish crawl onto land, then picked it up and tossed it as far away as possible. Or rather squashed it.
Online, Tumblr presents itself as a place “to express yourself and discover yourself”, well, if that didn’t sound hollow before, it sure does now.
